The Okama Paradox

Israel Ariño and Clara Gassull Quer, in The Okama Paradox, establish a dialogue between photography and drawing. The book originates from an experience lived during a shared trip to Japan, which Clara noted in her notebook: “They say that right here, where we are standing, lies the Okama crater. But if we cannot see it, how can we believe it exists?”

Photography and drawing propose other ways of seeing, imagining, and feeling what lies before us. Drawing does so in a more abstract and synthetic manner, through a subtle yet forceful line. Photography, in turn, is anchored in reality, attempting to go beyond what its appearance reveals.

Both disciplines seek to share with the viewer processes and temporal experiences that extend into poetic spaces. The result is a record of what was lived: two intertwined stories in which each acts as an echo of the other.
